Persona 5: The Phantom X is a jRPG with gacha elements, distributed in a free-to-play model with microtransactions. It serves as a spin-off of the best-selling game Persona 5, released back in 2017. This project is the result of a collaboration between Atlus, Sega, and Perfect World (specifically, the Black Wings Game Studio team belonging to the latter).
Persona 5: The Phantom X takes us to an alternative version of the universe known from the original Persona 5. During the game, we find ourselves in contemporary Tokyo, and we take on the role of a high school student who leads a kind of double life.
During the day the main character studies, builds relationships, and devotes himself to ordinary everyday life. After dusk he visits mysterious and dangerous lands, where as a so-called Phantom Thief he confronts destructive visions and other dangers. Wandering between reality and the Metaverse, the hero also visits the mysterious Velvet Room, where he confronts his own destiny.
In Persona 5: The Phantom X we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). Similar to most other titles under the Persona banner, including the original "fifth" game, we operate on two levels.
We lead a normal life in Tokyo during the day, attending classes, establishing relationships with NPCs, and nurturing them, or even going to work part-time.
Under the cover of night, the voice of the titular Persona - the supernatural manifestation of our character's psyche - comes to power. Together with other Phantom Thieves, we explore dungeons called Palaces. Shadows) and we face opponents referred to as Shadows (in English). Shadows, which means inner demons dormant in people). The fights with them take place in a turn-based mode, and involve skillful juggling of the abilities of individual characters.
As we progress, we develop our protagonist, which over time increases his combat potential. It's worth ing that during the game we are not tied to a single Persona - we can change them, gaining access to various styles of play.
The graphic design of Persona 5: The Phantom X is maintained in the manga style characteristic of the series. The character designs were overseen by Shigenori Soejima, a veteran of the series, as well as other of his team.
