A first-person action game with survival elements, set in a post-apocalyptic version of Russia. In Misery we can visit a territory destroyed by an atomic explosion. We travel the wasteland searching for the antenna parts. Our goal is to send the SOS distress call from the bunker serving as our headquarters.
Misery is an action game with survival elements, set in Russia, in an area devastated by a nuclear disaster. The game was developed by the independent studio Platypus Entertainment.
In Misery we watch the events from a first-person perspective (FPP).
The gameplay begins with a countdown to a nuclear explosion. The game gives us 60 seconds, during which we have to collect everything we deem necessary, and then head to the bunker, which from that point on will be our only shelter. Our primary goal becomes survival and gathering all parts of the antenna, which will allow us to send a request for evacuation.
The gameplay is based on expeditions to the radioactive wasteland. The locations we visit are procedurally generated, which makes each session look slightly different from the previous ones. We explore ruined apartment buildings, sunken settlements in the marshes, nuclear shelters, or graveyards of vehicles and machines. We must keep our eyes peeled so as not to miss any useful items or resources, such as food, water, medicine, or weapons.
The matter is complicated by the fact that in the places we visit, numerous dangers lurk in the form of hostile people and mutated creatures. The game also includes bosses guarding access to the antenna parts. As if that wasn't enough, after dark our character starts to lose his mind, which is why we have to act in a hurry to get back to the bunker before sunset.
The game allows us to adapt our safe haven to individual needs and preferences. We can place new rooms and arrange space, as well as improve it in various ways, including installing power generators (gas, solar or wind).
We can play Misery alone or in cooperative mode. The game allows for multiplayer gameplay over the Internet or on a local network.
The graphic design of Misery is maintained in a retro style reminiscent of games from the era of the first PlayStation. It features low quality character models and grayish surroundings, which can be considered as an element of atmosphere building.
