The Witcher 3 ending was supposed to be much more dramatic because of Mass Effect 2's inspiration. Geralt's choices would decide the death of many major characters
The developers of The Witcher 3 shared amazing stories from behind the scenes, revealing ideas that ultimately didn't make it into the final version of the game and the Blood and Wine DLC.

During an interview with The Witcher 3, the game creators talked about some interesting ideas that never made it into the game.
Marcin Blacha, the lead screenwriter of the third installment, shared that one of the original ideas was a quest where Geralt would the Wild Hunt. The Witcher planned to sneak on board the legendary ship Naglfar by pretending to be one of the ghostly warriors, in order to carry out a few quests as part of his infiltration. The idea, although it had potential for an interesting plot, ultimately ended up in the trash.
The developer also revealed that the original ending of the game was supposed to be inspired by the suicide mission from Mass Effect 2. We're talking about a crucial moment where the player's choices would determine the life or death of Geralt's companions. It was ultimately significantly simplified in the final version of Wild Hunt, but as a result, it gained in originality.
We redesigned it a little bit, and we decided to make this more personal ending, itted Blacha.
The story shared by the scriptwriter of The Witcher 3, Tomasz Marchewka, also sounds surprisingly. The developer explained that one of the abandoned quests from the Blood and Wine expansion was a story about a young stable boy named Egg, who, after the death of a knight (he died because he forgot to take his medicine), stole his armor and set off on his own adventures. In a darkly humorous narration, Egg would take off pieces of his heavy armor until he stood naked, except for his sword, facing the monster he had no chance of defeating.
The end of the story was supposed to be bittersweet, as the Egg we saved would be killed by the villagers for stealing the knight's armor.
Marchewka reluctantly itted that the early version of this DLC didn't include vampires. It's hard to imagine this expansion without Detlaff and the whole storyline with bloodthirsty monsters, but it's clear that the story could have gone in a completely different direction.
